Tenacity Herbicide is a systemic pre-emergent and post-emergent weed killer. With mesotrione 40% as its active ingredient, Tenacity Herbicide is known for its selective contact and residual control of weeds in turfgrasses.

When used as a pre-emergent, Tenacity works by being absorbed by weeds as they emerge from the soil. When used as a post-emergent, Tenacity will be absorbed by the targeted weed through foliar contact.

Tenacity Herbicide can also provide excellent control of crabgrass and many other weeds in residential yards. This is important because MSMA, our go-to recommendation for crabgrass control, has been banned by the EPA for homeowners or residential use.

Tools Needed

Tenacity Herbicide can be applied with a pressurized hydraulic sprayer, high-volume handgun spray, handheld pump sprayer, or backpack sprayer.

How to Use

Spraying Tenacity pre-emergent to yard

  • Step 1: First, you will need to determine the square footage of the target area in order to calculate how much Tenacity you will need. You can do this by multiplying the length and width of your area (length x width = square footage). You will also need to determine the species of turf the weed is present on prior to application as this will effect the application rate. For large areas, the typical application rate is between 4-8 fluid ounces per 30 gallons of water per acre. For smaller areas and spot treatments, a half teaspoon of Tenacity in 1 gallon of water will treat 1,000 square feet. For example, if your area is 2,000 sq. ft., you will need to mix one teaspoon of Tenacity with 2 gallons of water.
  • Step 2: Fill your sprayer with half the amount of water, add measured amount of Tenacity Herbicide, then pour in remaining half of water. Close the spray tank lid and shake until the product has fully dissolved and throughly has been mixed.
  • Step 3: Once your solution is complete, apply Tenacity Herbicide selectively to the target weed, being sure not to over-apply to the point of runoff. Use a fan-spray nozzle setting for even coverage. Repeat application in 2-3 weeks for best results.

Where to Use

Applying Tenacity Herbicide to grass

Tenacity Herbicide is used for weed control in turfgrasses in residential and commercial sites, golf courses (excluding putting greens with a 5 foot buffer), sod farms, athletic fields, parks, cemeteries, airports, and lawns.

When to Use

Use Tenacity during the growing season when unwanted weeds are on the property. Tenacity pre-emergent applications must be done in the fall and early spring. For post-emergent applications, it is best to apply Tenacity herbicide to young, actively growing weeds and may require a second application after 2 to 3 weeks.

Safety Information

Before applying this product, make sure to put on the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for safety - gloves, goggles, long-sleeved clothing, and a face mask. Tenacity Herbicide is safe for pets and kids when used according to the Tenacity Herbicide label. Pets and children should not be present during treatment and should remain out of the treated areas until they have completely dried.

Special Considerations

Bentgrass, Poa annua, kikuyu grass, zoysiagrass, seashore paspalum, and bermudagrass are sensitive to Tenacity mesotrione herbicide applications. Avoid spraying these turf types unless control can be tolerated. Avoid overspray onto ornamental plants or flower beds and gardens. Roses and daylilies are sensitive plant species.

A surfactant is recommended with Tenacity to improve weed control and provide a better stick to the leaf surface of the weeds.
