Step 1: Prep Your Lawn For Application

Before applying granular herbicides, it is important to prep your lawn for the application. For the granular herbicide application to be effective, it needs bind to the soil surface. You’ll want to mow your lawn first and then water your lawn a day or two before application.

You should also check if the soil temperature is conducive for herbicide applications. Herbicides should be laid out before the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees in the Spring. You can check the soil temperature with the help of a soil thermometer which you can stick into the soil to read the temperature.

Step 2: Load Granular Herbicide Into Spreader

Following the label directions, load your spreader with the proper amount of granules for the area to be treated. Make sure the spreader is calibrated well and is at a setting that is best to get even coverage on the area that needs treatment.

Before applying granular herbicides, measure the square footage of the area you want to treat. You can do this by multiplying the length and width together (length x width = square footage).

To apply Nitrophos Barricade, you may be using anywhere from 1.5 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet depending on your turf species. For ornamentals, the application rate will be between 2.5 and 5.94 pounds per 1,000 sq. feet. For example, if you have perennial ryegrass on a 3,000 sq. ft. lawn and the labeled rate for your turf is 2 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft., you will need to load 6 pounds of Barricade into your spreader to cover your entire yard.

Step 3: Apply To Your Lawn

Broadcast the granules uniformly using your spreader type. You may need to conduct 2 perpendicular passes to get uniform coverage. If any granules land on your driveway, sidewalk, or street, sweep the product back onto your lawn. Activate the granules by watering your lawn with at least 0.5 inches of water for best results.

Step 4: Check Your Results.

Regularly monitor your lawn for any issues and reapply your granular herbicide as needed.
