PastureGard HL Herbicide

PastureGard HL Herbicide, manufactured by DOW/CORTEVA, is an effective herbicide for managing brush, woody plants and invasive trees on rangeland and pastures.

This emulsifiable concentrate product is mainly used by land managers and those in agricultural settings. While the product works well on its own, PastureGard HL Herbicide also mixes well with other herbicides. If weeds, trees and brush are causing a problem for livestock, PastureGard HL can resolve it.

Tools Needed

To use PastureGard HL Herbicide, you will need a pump sprayer or backpack sprayer for smaller applications. For larger applications, use a spray rig.

How to Use

• Step 1: Determine how much PastureGard HL you will need by calculating the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, you will need to measure and multiply length times width. For acreage, divide the square footage by 43,560. Typical spot applications of PastureGard are done at a rate of 0.18 fl. oz. to 1.47 fl oz. in a gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. (this comes out to between 0.5 to 4 pints per acre). So for example, if you are treating a 3,000 sq. ft. area, you would need to mix between 0.54 fl. oz. to 4.41 fl. oz. in 3 gallons of water.
• Step 2: Fill the spray tank with half of the amount of water required. Then add in the appropriate amount of PastureGard HL. Add in the appropriate amount of selected surfactant as suggested by the label and agitate the sprayer to make sure the solutions is mixed well.
• Step 3: Spray the PastureGard HL application to targeted areas where weeds are growing, preferably on a fan spray setting for uniform coverage. If trying to control an invasive tree, you will need an oil-based carrier and will need to perform a cut-stump treatment. Apply enough spray to wet the lower 12 to 15 inches of the trunk, including the root collar. 

Where to Use

PastureGard HL can be used on rangeland, permanent grass pastures, and conservation reserve program (CRP) acres (including fence rows and non-irrigation ditch banks within these areas). You can apply anywhere you need to control undesirable woody plants and annual and perennial broadleaf weeds.

When to Use

For best results, apply when plants are actively growing, which typically occurs from late spring to early fall. Apply at least 10 days prior to leaf color change in late summer. Application in late summer or in periods of dry weather when plants are not actively growing may result in unsatisfactory control. For best results apply when plants are actively growing, not drought stressed, and have minimal insect damage or defoliation.

Safety Information

PastureGard HL is safe to use around children, pets, and livestock when applied according to the product label. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and when making applications with PastureGard HL. Do not enter treated areas for at least 12 hours.

Special Considerations

Low-volume basal and cut-stump applications of PastureGard HL require an oil-based carrier. Be sure pumps and hoses are resistant to oil-based carriers. Wands and spray tips also should be chemical-resistant. Adjustable tips give you more control when making individual plant treatments and there should be a cut-off at the tip to avoid wasting product (such as a strainer and check ball valve or low volume wand).
