2,4-D is the common name for 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. This active ingredient has been widely used in selective herbicides since the 1940’s to control weeds in residential, commercial, and agricultural properties. Products made with 2,4-D come in a variety of different formulations from liquids, to dusts, to granules.
Â
Products made with 2,4-D are made to control broadleaf weeds. They have no effect on most grasses, but a few like bentgrass are vulnerable. In a liquid application, 2,4-D works when it makes contact and is absorbed into plant tissue. It causes cancer-like growth, forcing certain cells that carry water and nutrients to divide and grow uncontrollably. This unregulated growth shuts down vital systems and causes affected plants to die.
Â
2,4-D herbicides are safe to use when applied according to their product label directions. Always wear the proper Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE, when applying herbicides and keep them out of reach of any children or pets. Exposure via consumption, inhalation, or direct skin contact may cause harm. When applied to plants in a liquid formulation, always wait for the product to dry completely before letting people or pets around the area.Â
Â
2,4-D can often be mixed with other active ingredients in some products. Always read your product’s label thoroughly before use.
If you’re looking for an easy-to-use herbicide that can control broadleaf weeds on your property, check out 2,4-D Amine. 2,4-D Amine is a liquid herbicide concentrate. Just mix it with water, and apply. For a general use on lawns and ornamental turf, we recommend you mix and apply 2,4-D Amine using a 1 or 1.5-gallon handheld sprayer, at a rate of 2 to 3.16 pints per acre. For smaller applications, this breaks down to 0.72 to 1.1 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet. Use enough water to ensure even coverage throughout your treatment area.
Â
With low pressure, spray weeds directly and use a fan setting to thoroughly coat the leaves’ surface. The product needs to make contact with the leaves in order to absorb into the targeted plant. Spray the weed to the point of wet, not runoff.
Â
You should start to see visible results of treated weeds browning and wilting within 2 weeks. If necessary, you may make a 2nd application 21 days after your initial treatment. For the most effective results, we recommend you make your treatment when your targeted weed is young and actively growing.
